Many directors are masters in the art of transforming sets into characters, or almost.
Just think of the whimsical Wes Anderson landscapes The Grand Hotel Budapest, the pastel avenues of the suburbs Edward Scissorhands, or the titular Americana hotel at Bad times at the El Royale. These sites, and many others, are not just places where the action takes place. They contribute to the action.
With Bong Joon Ho‘s Parasite sweep the Oscars 2020, the attention paid to film sets has never been so omnipresent. The Parks House, where most of the action in the Korean the film unfolds, is constructed so intricately that it is the second best takeaway from the film for every viewer – naturally, the frenzied plot twists take first place.
As Parasite enters the cinema hall of fame for the scenography, we offer a retrospective in other emblematic houses in films, most of which lost their cinematic fame for new life as private property.
When we first see the lavish grounds of the park in the film, the housekeeper presents the modernist building as the one designed by star architect Namgoong. Namgoong may be fictional, so all credit for this awesome set goes to production designer Lee Ha Jun, who built the house from scratch to director Bong Jun Ho’s specifications, and is trusted when we say he there were many things to consider, from camera angles to manipulating natural light to enhance the mood of certain scenes.
The house is built just for the movie in a lot outside a studio, so unfortunately it’s not living space, but that fact makes the detail of the whole thing even more impressive.
A Star is Born (2018)
The home of rockstar Jackson Maine in A star is born turned out to be a real home, housed in the hood of Monte Nido de Calabasas. Designed by Douglas Rucker, this outskirts estate was recently sold for US $ 2 million (S $ 2.775 million).
Django Unleashed (2013)
Quentin Tarantino’s films can be controversial, but there is one thing that has always been unanimous when it comes to his work: excellent set designs. Django Unchained is a prime example thanks to Big Daddy’s house, which turned out to be a veritable historic sugarcane plantation known as the Evergreen Plantation in Louisiana which dates back to 1790. The facade of the house designed in the neo style -Greek, with the sprawling stairs from the curving verandah to the lawn as the most memorable feature. Parts of the film were shot here, as well as some of the 36 other buildings on the site.
Whatever your opinion on dusk, which isn’t terrible about Stephanie Meyer’s ode to sparkling vampires is the house where the Cullens are staying. Major vampires display excellent architectural taste, although all real nods should go to Skylab Architecture. Known as the Hoke Residence, the property is located on the border between Portland and Oregon Forest Park, designed to show the interplay of the elements and inner drama – a treehouse for adults, if you want to. want.
The Lake House (2006)
As much as we love Keanu Reeves, the house by the lake is forgettable. The romantic drama is a remake of It Mare, the Korean original, which is much better, in our books. What we will remember from the Hollywood copy is the lake house of its namesake, a glass house reinforced by beams that imbued the building with a serene light during the day. Architectural styles referenced include the Regency period of the 1800s in England.
The house was completely built for this movie in ten weeks, but later demolished and replaced with a fishing pier because it didn’t meet some building codes.
Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
Famous American architect and Googie spearhead John Lautner is the man behind this famous house of classic Link film. The futuristic villa is called Elrod House and is the site of billionaire Willard Whyte’s vacation home in the film.
Designed in 1969, the space spans an impressive 9,000 square feet. and has five bedrooms. It has changed hands since its film debut, last sold in 2016 for US $ 7.7 million – nearly halved from the previous price of US $ 13.89 million in 2009, according to Realtor.com.
Ferris Bueller’s Party (1986)
Ferris Bueller’s day off is a teenage comedy classic that will go down in history for two things: history, of course, but also the Ben Rose House, the family home of his sidekick Cameron Frye. The glazed estate is designed by A. James Speyer, Mies van de Rohe’s protégé, and was to be briefly demolished until it was purchased for US $ 1.06 million (S $ 1.47 million) in 2016, then renovated, with a new garage that can house not one, but two Ferraris.
The Godfather (1972)
There are many impressive houses in Francis Ford Coppola’s house The Godfather, but Jack Woltz’s mansion is the cream of the crop. This lavish mansion spans 50,000 square feet, with 18 bedrooms and 29 bathrooms, and has a full roster of famous comings and goings outside of Coppola’s masterpiece. Built in 1927 by Gordon Kauffmann, who would later design the Hoover Dam, the Beverly Hills home was owned by publishing mogul William Randolph Hearst. The property later became the honeymoon destination for John F. and Jackie Kennedy, and is now seeking a buyer. US $ 125 million (HK $ 969 million) is sufficient.
