Community Health Options Partners with National Fitness Campaign to Build Outdoor Fitness Grounds in Maine

LEWISTON – Lewiston-based Community Health Options, the state’s only member-run nonprofit health plan, and the National Fitness Campaign have launched a statewide partnership to expand free access to the world class outdoor fitness. The partnership will bring attractive and inviting outdoor fitness grounds to communities across Maine in an ongoing effort to improve quality of life, promote activity, and create equitable access to outdoor exercise programs for communities across the state. .

The NFC is a national initiative to help communities plan, finance and build wellness infrastructure. The ultimate goal is to fight preventable diseases caused by sedentary behavior and transform the next decade so that millions of Americans choose outdoor wellness activities for healthier lives.

“The Mainers are known to enjoy the great outdoors. Our partnership with the NFC will help more adults enjoy outdoor exercise and improve their mental and physical health, ”said Kevin Lewis, President and CEO of Health Options. “Our vision to be a leader in transforming and improving individual and community health aligns naturally with the work of the NFC.

Thanks to the NFC partnership, the Health Options fitness courts will be built in easily accessible public spaces from summer 2022. These fitness courts, combined with free digital workouts via a fitness app available to residents of Maine, will provide community wellness opportunities and free access to outdoors fitness. NFC’s award-winning initiative is now planning its 500e Healthy Community in America and offers unparalleled and must-have outdoor wellness programs across the country.

The NFC and Health Options will begin accepting grant applications on November 4 to support the construction of a fitness field in local communities. Municipalities, schools and other qualified organizations that have accessible public spaces are encouraged to apply. Grant recipients will receive a wellness toolkit and design resources to help plan, fund and launch their outdoor fitness pitch and community wellness campaign. “The National Fitness Campaign is proud to welcome Community Health Options as a sponsor from the State of Maine,” said Mitch Menaged, founder of the NFC. “This program will provide enormous resources to contribute to the important mission of tackling obesity and improving health outcomes as the network of fitness fields grows across the state. We look forward to working with Health Options to make this campaign a great success.
