Requests that abusers of sick animals be placed on an official registry similar to sex offenders

Watchdogs are asking for a national registry to detail those who are cruel to animals.

The shame list is part of the Scottish SPCA’s pre-election manifesto to crack down on cruelty.

The association’s project, A Better Scotland for Animals, also formulates a series of demands that identify the worst animal cruelty trends in Scotland today.

SSPCA wants a total ban on snares that can cause horrific injuries to wildlife

It targets the use of cruel traps, which leave birds and small mammals to die of agony, often set by game wardens whose sole interest is to maintain grouse stocks.

And that requires tougher measures to prevent thugs from unnecessarily cutting bulldogs’ ears to make them ferocious.

The main demands include:

● A national register of cruel people towards animals.

● Ban on snares.

● Ban on the export of live animals for fattening or slaughter.

● A review to strengthen the ban on fox hunting.

● Prohibition of collars that give electric shocks to dogs

Mike Flynn, Chief Superintendent of the Scottish SPCA, said: “Animal welfare transcends political opinion and as the election approaches we will be campaigning to gain all-party support for our manifesto.

“Scotland has made great strides in animal welfare in recent years, but we can always do more. “

A survey of 2,813 people carried out by ScotPulse on behalf of the Scottish SPCA shows that the majority of Scots support every element of the association’s manifesto.

The charity is also calling for animal welfare to be a mandatory part of the school curriculum, which it says is essential for society to realize the benefits of treating animals well.
