A member of the Oklahoma State University rodeo team has died after being injured after being kicked off a bull at the PRCA Pro Rodeo of the Palo Pinto County Livestock Association.

Rowdy Swanson, 20, was riding a bull named Gritty, which is owned by Rafter G Rodeo Co. in Terrell, when he suffered fatal injuries Thursday night in Mineral Wells, Texas.

Swanson was thrown from the bull shortly after exiting the chute and someone who saw video of the crash said the bull’s hind legs appeared to fall on Swanson just after he hit the ground.

A bullfighter is then seen quickly covering Swanson.

Mature bulls can weigh around 2,400 pounds.

Gary Lothridge wrote on Facebook that Swanson stood up and attempted to leave the arena and moments later paramedics rushed into the arena.

“ With a heavy and sore heart I am sad to report that the OSU rodeo team has lost one of our own, ” coach Cody Hollingsworth said in a statement about Rowdy Swanson.

“ He was an integral part of our rodeo family and he will be sorely missed. Our hearts go out to the Swanson family at this time.

Swanson was studying animal science at Stillwater University and was licensed while trying to get a PRCA membership card.

The rodeo finally took place last Thursday after being postponed to April 1.

“The hearts of the entire rodeo community go out to Rowdy’s family at this tragic time,” added George Taylor, CEO of PRCA. “We will continue to keep Rowdy and her family in our thoughts and prayers.

The president of the Texas event paid tribute to Oklahoma native Swanson.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rowdy Swanson as a result of injuries sustained at the PRCA Pro Rodeo of the Palo Pinto County Livestock Association,” PPCLA Rodeo President Scott Fenner said on Friday.

“ The entire rodeo committee and our rodeo family extend our heartfelt condolences and deepest condolences to Rowdy’s mother, Venessa, his brother Roper and his entire family. ”

“ Our rodeo family has won another bull riding angel, ” Kendra Santos said on Facebook.

His girlfriend shared photos of the couple online as she remembered Swanson.
